Chetan Bhagat

Chetan Bhagat is coming with his fourth novel this Diwali season and it's called "2 states - the story of my marriage".
Recently, I happened to come across couple of his interviews on TV and it was good to know little more about him. This IIT-D + IIM-A passout has left his job in banking and is now settled in Mumbai focusing on writing novels and newspaper columns!

The biggest-selling english author in Indian history which he is; he is also focusing on writing movie-scripts now. Not a surprising decision by him given the fact that all his three novels published yet have found their fate in some released or yet-to-be-released movie. I am particularly impressed with the way he leveraged the publicity he got through his first few novels. He talks about the two aspects of his personality: Chetan - the entertainer and Chetan - the reformer. No doubt about his entertainment value; it is quite evident from his new novels that he wants to have some say on few social issues too. Not just that, he is taking up more social/political issues now through his various newspaper articles and by participating in many socially relevant discussions and conferences.

All in all, he is emerging on the scenes pretty strongly and is gradually becoming a role model for Indian youth. I am all set to watch his stints in writing, scripting and social-reforming. The fact that he left a hefty-salary job must be motivating him enough for all these.

Creativity!

It looks so clean; like.. machine-made.
It doesn't have that playfulness, that humanity; the one this drawing of flowers have.
The creativity lies in those lines sketched all over with a free hand. You need to have an understanding of art to know that!

What crap!

Give it back.

I thought that I will be spending more time on my blog when I will start staying alone but see, it has been almost 2 months that this place has seen any activity.
Well, lots have been happening around. Shifted to new house, new office building. Had a trip to Rameshwaram/Kanyakumari with parents and many more small things. Life has been good if anyone is concerned to know! :)

Ok. Now, I want to talk about not-so-talked-about responsibility. No one would deny the importance of internet in today's world. Personally, I get so many of my queries resolved through this amazing media. I mean, all kind of queries - whether I need some help in planning my travel or in finding some nearby food joint - whethere I am breaking my head to understand what PLL wander is or just trying to get a quick help with some perl syntax. Google, Wikipedia and so many forums have always been there for my rescue.
I realize that though I have got a lot of help from all these, my contribution has been close to nil. And there are many more like me who dont worry about contributing to this database. If there is something for which you can't find an apt solution, you should definitely upload that information for others whenever you discover the solution. So, I have decided to start contributing to the search database and I appeal others too, to start doing the same.

But be sure that you don't flood the database with duplicate informations. It adds no value but might increase the search time and can potentially contribute to global warming! :P

Happy googling!

MeraCareerGuide.com

Couple of days back, I came across this site which happened to be a start-up from one of my BITS batch-mate.
I found the site really amazing. It has information put up very systematically and according to what I learn, the data-base is growing fast. I am sure, in the long run, the move is going to help the students a lot, afterall it provides all the guidance and even 'the word of mouth' to all needed ones.

Kudos for the great initiative and wishing for the success.

My Champ!

He, too, had been there; had even won! But he could only be as good as his opponents. He had no motivation to improve further; little did he think about it amidst all his celebrations.

Years passed and Mikey found someone else doing it better. He was upset, he was feeling like a loser. He thought, "It's never too late". He decided to make up for it. Yes, he had other priorities but he tried to manage it along with them. He tried hard, very hard and he came out improved. He was satisfied, relieved.

Today, after couple more years, he feels that while trying to squeeze in time for patching up for the older mistakes, he was doing the same mistake again with the priorities he had in hand. Today again, he feels the need for improving the way he handled his priorities two years back.

But he is not gonna do the same mistake now, i won't let him.
I don't want him to keep living his past. The mistakes of the past can not be corrected this way, the correction needs to reflect in the opportunities in hand, not in the lost and forgotten ones.

Once, just once, let him realize his potential with no shackles and no limitations. He is the best. I don't want him to be a Pete watching a Roger proving himself better. He can and he has to stay generations ahead. He wants to live as a champion, die as a champion. He doesn't want to repent about anything in future. He knows, he has got the potential and I, too, believe it.

The Myth

And I encountered the redundant question once again: Arranged Marriage or Love Marriage?
I had a smile within and wondered if the later really exists!

My idea of that four letter word is very straight - if it's not blind, its not 'Love'. So what if people simplifies it for their convenience, i don't care.
If the trend to figure out your chemistry with someone from your caste and settle your equations with the bank-balance of your partner is what drives so called 'Love-Marriages', excuse me - i won't let you tag yourself with the sacred word! [Smiles] And if you are still wondering, looks, physique or figure too have no role to play here.

So, yes, given the 'matured' and 'practical' people all over, I don't see any Love-Marriages happening around. I assume the question is actually about self-arranged marriage or letting the privilege be with you parents. Fair enough -

Personally, I don't think, i am good at these things. Neither do I have time to invest here nor I have enough confidence to take the responsibility of that big decision. So, I will probably go with the traditional way!
I hope, life doesn't get boring after making such a public statement :)

Change, over the years.

As a kid, I wondered if I should invent something.
But then, I wasn't sure if it has already been invented. Excusing myself, I dropped the plan.

Today, I ask again if I should do something innovative.
And guess what, now I am better at excuses.

One lesson your coach didn't teach you..

And you want me to tell?
Go, figure out!

And it will get you everything you ever expected.

PS: It feels good to not write much about it.

They are matured.

I knew, someday it was to happen.
I had known it.
I knew, the impact will be deep.
I knew, it will be difficult.

But I got carried away.
I thought, I am being positive.
I was being a fool.
I was weak.

It is strange.
I lost but you didn't win.
You don't even know how bad I feel.
Am I being a fool again?
Probably, you know.

But, It's not you.
It is not your mistake.
Some people just can't think beyond self.
That's how they are.
They are 'matured'.
.... .... .... .... .... .... .... ....

It's not a poetry. I just wanted the post to look little long :)

That's what Konkana tells Farhan in 'Luck By Chance': "इसमें तुम्हारी कोई गलती नहीं है, कुछ लोग होते ही ऐसे हैं.."

Education.

For a note, after reading the talk by Hamming which I talked about in my older post , I am actually able to relate many of those things in my day to day life. It really makes sense. I hope, someday I will be at a stage to claim, "Hey, I owe it to Hamming!" :)

So, coming to the point which I am trying to talk about here:
"Moving from ignorance of an area to partial knowledge, and from that to a good grasp is something most people can do from either attending a class or self-study. But moving from understanding an area to really knowing it is more difficult"

That is a quote, I had read long back and probably I blessed my gtalk status also with it. No doubt about the correctness it has; I was just startled with the fact that its realization would have come to me many years ago if I had given a thought to my heart's voice a bit seriously in my school days. It is amazing to find someone else thinking on the same lines as you and it becomes really useful when it gives that extra stimulus to your mind to take that otherwise weak voice seriously.

Indian education system (yes, I dare to generalize) doesn't motivate 'really understanding' things. Students never understand that the exams are meant to test their understanding of subject (nor are test papers good enough to do that). They just concentrate on getting marks, revising the course hundred times and then spitting out all that knowledge on exam sheet. A month later, all the 'accumulated knowledge' is washed off. Its not so easy to really understand the things. Scoring high marks, getting rewards and recognition all look so tempting that the essence of education is sidelined. It is so disheartening.
True knowledge comes from questioning; the quality subdued in children in their early years by the society. They keep asking something, you will feel irritated and finally you will slap them and make them shut up. In India, how many times do we see parents respecting thoughts of kids?

Another thing to consider is: When you are writing a competition-exam with all that coaching and you don't qualify, you try again. Then you fail and you try again. Your parents and teachers keep motivating you (till the fourth attempt in which you clear the exam) saying "Never stop trying, you will win in the end". Haven't heard of any better shit. Of course, you will get it if you continue trying for it. But what next? Why don't you realize that your intellect in this field doesn't match with your counterparts? You won't get those many chances after joining the college. You shouldn't delude yourself.
Exams are meant to test all the basic knowledge required for the further studies you are opting for. You shouldn't aim to clear the exam but to 'really understand' that knowledge. There is no shortcut, no escape.

Haven't we encountered the cases wherein preparing for the final semester exams, shuffling through the books, all of a sudden, that thought strikes us and the entire course which looked useless throughout the semester starts making sense. But it doesn't happen all the time. People passout with all the recognition, rewards and everything but the knowledge.
And one fine day, when you are matured enough, you meet a person who hasn't got all those rewards and is not as well-recognized as you but makes you realize that he knows far more than you. You go into hibernation, think what went wrong and by the time you realize, its too late! Life is no longer same. You feel insulted with all those praises, you don't dare to take a snap with all your rewards. You curse yourself, you curse everyone for fooling you. You are broke!

I, desperately, feel the need of change in our education system. I want it to be focused on 'really understanding' the things and it should motivate the students for the same. Student should really be proud of his education in his whole life.
I can see the change coming but its very slow, very little. I wish to contribute towards it in later part of my life; got some other priorities at the moment.

Better Together..

Came across this beautiful song couple weeks back and liked it. Very sweetly sung and too romantic.
Written and Performed By : Jack Johnson.

There's no combination of words
I could put on the back of a postcard,
No song that I could sing
But I can try for your heart,
Our dreams, and they are made out of real things,
Like a shoebox of photographs,
With sepiatone loving,
Love is the answer
At least for most of the questions in my heart ,
Like why are we here? And where do we go?
And how come it's so hard?
It's not always easy,
And sometimes life can be deceiving,
I'll tell you one thing, its always better when we're together

For a good romantic story, check out 'THAT NIGHT' by Rahul Singh here.
" But it seems so nice to leave it at this juncture...when the seed is sown and the feeling is growing... whether the plant grows or not, whether they fall in love or not... whether they end up together or not... it’s all irrelevant... because the best phase of love, is when it’s just born in your heart. Truly it feels great"

And yes, Congrats Nazkani for IIM-B! I know, you are reading this. :-)

Things to know for researchers..

Around a week back, I had read the transcript of the talk 'You and Your Research' given by Richard Hamming (Hamming-distance/ Hamming-code fame). I found it interesting as he explained his points with some really good experiences of his life. Mostly aimed for people aspiring to be scientists, this talk can still be useful for the people from other fields. At least for me, it was really enlightening! Some of his views might still be debatable but a good insight to start with.

Some excerpts:
1. Luck favors the prepared mind.
For success, luck changes the odds, but there is some definite control on the part of the individual. You should be prepared for opportunities. Don't panic but welcome them. Push yourself and put all possible efforts for every opportunity.

2. You just need enough brains to invent.
You need not be very intelligent but you do need to have confidence in yourself and courage to pursue your ideas.

3. Scientists contribute more when they are young. The contribution reduces when they have received a Nobel Prize. Its because they no longer get to pursue the problems from scratch.
In Hamming's opinion, "The Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton has ruined more good scientists than any institution has created, judged by what they did before they came and judged by what they did after. Not that they weren't good afterwards, but they were superb before they got there and were only good afterwards."
So, you should always continue to plant little acorns from which mighty oak trees grow.

4. Change faults to assets ALWAYS!
Major inventions have come out of some limitations. So, what you want isn't always the best for you.

5. Put that 10-20% extra effort for your work if you want to outperform others. It is like compound interest; the increase in productivity will be more than twice. You might have to neglect few things, do it. But be very sure about doing that hard-work sensibly. The steady application of effort with a little bit more work, 'intelligently applied' is what does the trick.

6. Be committed to your problem and always keep track of the unexplained misfits of theory.
Creativity comes out of subconscious. If you are deeply immersed and committed to a topic, day after day after day, your subconscious has nothing to do but work on your problem. So, Keep your subconscious starved so it has to work on your problem such that you can sleep peacefully and get the answer in the morning free.

7. Always ask "What are the important problems in my field"?
If you want to do great work, you clearly must work on important problems, and you should have an idea; something a normal scientist forgets to realize in his routine work.

8. Keep the doors of your cube open.
It allows important ideas to flow towards you. You get to involve in the discussions about future developments and get the right directions.

9. Adapt yourself according to system.
Your primary goal is to invent. So, you should not waste your energy fighting the system.
You can either learn how to adapt the system to your desires or you can fight it steadily, as a small undeclared war, for the whole of your life. you pay a small steady price throughout the whole of your professional career. And this, over a whole lifetime, adds up to an enormous amount of needless trouble.

10. Don't get used to excessive reading.
Spend more time in thinking what you can do about something rather than reading about what others have done. Believe me, that study never ends. Before reading others' solutions, think and figure out your solutions.

11. Always have great people around.
You need to discuss the things with the critical mass who makes the discussion meaningful. Stay away from 'sound absorbers'.

12. Stay away from self-delusion and learn to put up with stress.
You should accept your drawbacks and at the same time, you have to put up with stress if you want to be a great scientist. You can lead a nice life; you can be a nice guy or you can be a great scientist.

13. Be clear about what you want.
When your vision of what you want to do is what you can do single-handedly, then you should pursue it. The day your vision, what you think needs to be done, is bigger than what you can do single-handedly, then you have to move towards management. If you want to be a great researcher, you won't make it being president of the company.

Well, these are few things which might summarize the talk but you will appreciate it more when you read the talk. By the way, this was a paper given for informal studies as part of one of the MS course in a US university. How I wish, in India, we would have understood education correctly!

Great Show by Rajasthan Royals!

Such a beautiful morning here today.. An after-effect of the last night's rain!
No sun, curtains wide open, cool breeze flowing, assorted music, a fresh mind and me home alone..

Day before, we all witnessed one of the most exciting cricket games of recent times: Rajasthan Royals v/s Kolkata Knight Riders
It was far more dramatic than any of these reality shows being relayed all the time. Forcing a match almost lost to the super over and then winning it chasing a target of 16 runs in an over. Wow! Brilliant Cricket.

Warnie boy showed it yet again. Sure, they are the last year's winners but they don't have Watson and Tanvir this time. Frankly, you don't feel like cheering this team. They just have one hitter in Yusuf Pathan. But then, they have Warne. He does something to the team, something magical. I remember him discussing something with Raut in the the final over of their batting (Raut had missed two balls earlier) and then, Raut scores 14 runs in next 3 balls of the over taking the team score to 150. I am not taking credit from anyone; but Warne does have something in him.

He has great understanding of cricket. He utilizes the limited resources in his side just too well. He took some brilliant decisions at some crucial points and did some good bowling and fielding too. Leading by example, you see!

I am sure that this match will be used by some teams for their internal training but the more interesting thing is, the team makes a good case-study for a management/psychology class. It is amazing to see what a team can achieve with motivation, teamwork and a great leader. I loved it.
I am not sure if I wish them to win but I definitely look forward to their games.

On a lighter note, Girish tells me to support Royal Challengers as I am in Bangalore but then, he himself supports Ferrari and not Force India! :D

No Adventures.

There was a bungee-jumping accident in Bangalore this weekend. A Marine engineer from Chennai, Bhargava fell heads down from a height of ~100 ft and died.
Guy had tried bungee jump and was trying reverse bungee jump next when the harness snapped.

As a matter of fact, Vijay, Girish, Kartik and me were also there the same day. The plan was made on Friday and I told them that I will accompany them just because I wanted to see it and won't be trying any jump. We reached at the venue around 1 p.m. Girish had done some homework and was telling about the bungee accidents. I asked why are you trying it and Girish just passed the question saying accidents can happen even while you are driving bike, right? Kartik did support me and mocked his comparison.

After reaching there, all three of them decided to try reverse bungee jump because the normal bungee jump would have required lot of wait. They got themselves registered. We were watching the jumps and even shot some videos. There was a safety net for normal bungee jump but nothing for reverse bungee jump. Reverse jumps had not started by then. So, we thought of going out for lunch and coming back.

There weren't many people around when we returned. We thought, others would also have gone for lunch. We were gossiping and after some time, I told them to inquire when the jumps are gonna resume. Vijay went to talk and signaled us that the thing is over. We all reached to him and then, we knew that some accident has happened and the guy might die. All our energy sapped.

After sometime, we were returning. Vijay was telling us not to talk about the incident at his home. His mom had wished us 'Best of Luck' many a times when we were leaving for the jump and seemed that luck was the savior.

I reached home by 5 p.m. It was a very sad incident. I was having headache. On sunday, I went to see a doctor. I had viral fever - 102 degrees. Got an injection, and all those medicines. And today, I feel a bit fine after spending one whole day lying on the bed.

I am not trying any such adventures in my life. Not in India for sure!

Yes, you did it.

Mood: pleased
This is for everyone who emerged victorious through the cumbersome selection process of India's premier management institutions - IIMs!
It feels great to sense the happiness of people whom you have seen going through all that process - juggling between office work and TIME classes, squeezing out every possible minute from their schedule and also deprioritizing some of their interests....

Morning, I see Arpit calling. We just talked day before and he never calls in the morning. I could sense that the results are out. And then he tells "Congratulate kar do, IIM mein ho gayaa hai" :)
And then comes the real part, he had told everyone that he is having a call from IIM-B only and today he keeps telling that he has actually cleared all the IIMs. But I wasn't really shocked. The guy who can get 100% marks without even attempting the complete question paper and can top any course even after constantly getting 'screwed' can make even this possible. No, I am not being sarcastic; all these childish acts of yours don't bother me anymore. I am really happy for you.

And as I go about spreading the news to the world through my gtalk status, I know that Kanchan has also made it to BILK. Alok couldn't be contacted and in noon, he comes online on gtalk and i ask him the results. But this guy is hillarious; he tells that 'abhi pdf download kar rahaa hun. dekhke bataata hun' and yes, he also makes it to B and I.

Congratulations guys! I am sure you are going to find every bit of this effort worth it after reaching to IIMs.
And ofcourse, treats are awaited! :D

From Here and There..

Some random things from last few weeks-

1. A week's trip to home. I guess, the timing couldn't have been better. Got to be at home for Holi, enjoyed over the B"days of my cousin sister and niece, also had a get-together with many of my school-time buddies. It was really a great feeling to be there. And yes, I also tried my hands on bike for the first time in my life. A nice break, I would say.

2. One thing which I have learnt the hard way is one can't keep everyone happy. I tried doing that, only to make my own life miserable. Sorry guys, no hard feelings.

3. I finished this Aravind Adiga's novel "The White Tiger". I don't really appreciate it and as Gins had told me earlier that it is the worst among the booker prize winning novels, I anyway had less expectations from it. The plight of a poor in India is emphasized beyond reality and there aren't more than couple of takeaways for entrepreneurs.
All said, it actually was a good enough timepass over my journey to home. So, no grudges.

4. I have been playing enough badminton lately and I am just loving it. My game has improved a bit. Thanks to Sachin for those tips!

5. I think, I would also mention about that ~90 mins talk with Arpit. Dude, I appreciate every word of it. Yes, I am yet to think about that long term plan and am still searching for my fortune at the bottom of the Pyramid. :)

6. At office, I have been at a slow pace in my work after returning from vacation. But the good part is, I know it and I am back in mood. This one guy in my team keeps making my life more interesting and challenging. Such a treat to work with people like these. I can say for sure that this is one thing I like most about Nvidia.

7. And yes, These MTV guys are just getting into my head. With this Roadies - Splitsvilla saga all over, I can't help but avoid watching MTV. It is so mean and addicting.
But, I have been following American Idol and Dance India Dance. It was good to listen Anoop Desai sing "Always on my mind" but i want some variety from him. 'Dance India Dance' is the latest favorite. Bad that the Hip hop classes moved to Koramangala just when I wanted to join.

8. Small mention about the changed look of my blog and that lonely road walk at 1:30 a.m. :)

I still think, there were few more but I don't want to trouble my brain to recall them.

Ciao-
Madhusudan.
